| ADDRESSING EMOTIONAL/BEHAVIORAL DILEMMAS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: |
| Behavioral and emotional concerns about children should be addressed as soon as they are recognized by care takers. A sudden change in grades and school performance, a noticeable change in the types of friends, withdrawal or a desire to be isolated from others are all red flags to an emotional dilemma a child or an adolescent may be experiencing. Play and activity therapy for children and adolescents give the counselor an opportunity to create a safe atmosphere to interact with the child/adolescent. This process gives the client an opportunity to explore the emotional dilemma which may be causing the undesired behavior. Through expression of feelings and a therapeutic alliance between the child/adolescent and the counselor, a feeling of safety and openness is experienced by the client, and new patterns and responses can develop; therefore, more satisfying feelings and behaviors become possible. |
